We Are An Eco-Friendly Company
The Envirostar program is a service of the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program of King County. The program certifies businesses for their efforts in preventing pollution and reducing hazardous waste. We currently have four stars.
The goal of the program is to reduce waste, of course, but also to manage the waste that inevitably happens. Like many of you at home, we start by using environmentally friendly cleaning products. Even the parts washer that we use is water-based and non-toxic. Due to the nature of our business, however, we can't stop there. Automobiles are filled with all kinds of potentially damaging materials, and our job is to keep them out of the environment.
We keep spill kits on hand in easily accessible areas, and every employee is well versed in how to use them. We also have an accident plan that everyone is aware of, because no matter how careful you are, accidents happen. When we clean up around the shop, we have to be sure that nothing becomes water-born and contaminate the water supply. We also don't have the luxury of an open floor drain. Instead we have a containment system, to be absolutely certain that nothing hazardous will contaminate the environment. Our oil is stored in a room with three-foot-high walls, so even in the event of an earthquake; hopefully we won’t wreak any havoc of our own.
Almost everything we come into contact with has recycling potential. All metal, aluminum, scrap metal, and old car parts are recycled. Freon is filtered and treated to be re-used. We know that technically it is legal to throw out old oil filters, but we also know that almost a cup full of oil remains in them, so we pay the extra buck to have your old oil filter properly disposed of. And all of that oil we go through? We burn it in our shop during the winter with our waste-oil heater.
If you pull up in a leaky car, we'll be quick to put a pan under it. It's not because we're snobs worried about the cleanliness of our driveway, but because we are so close to a rainwater drain. At Superior Auto Service, we all plan to stay in the area for a while, and so we all have a vested interested in keeping the area beautiful.
